の続きです。

 

今回は Academic DiscussionのRubrics「評価基準」に基づき、皆さんが獲得を目指す評価点3、4、5はどのように異なるのかを確認しましょう。

 

まずは評価点5と評価点4の違いから。

Academic Discussion

 

評価点 5

A fully successful response

 

The response is a relevant and very clearly expressed contribution to the online discussion, and it demonstrates consistent facility in the use of language.

 

A typical response displays the following:

 

• Relevant and well-elaborated explanations, exemplifications, and/or details
• Effective use of a variety of syntactic structures and precise, idiomatic word choice
• Almost no lexical or grammatical errors other than those expected from a competent writer writing under timed conditions
(e.g., common typos or common misspellings or substitutions like there/their)

 

評価点 4

A generally successful response

 

The response is a relevant contribution to the online discussion, and facility in the use of language allows the writer’s ideas to be
easily understood.

 

A typical response displays the following:

• Relevant and adequately elaborated explanations, exemplifications, and/or details
• A variety of syntactic structures and appropriate word choice
• Few lexical or grammatical errors

 

 

評価点5と4の違いは一言で言えば、5は fully successful であるのに対して、4は generally successful であると。generally「概して、大まかに」なので、評価点5のfullyと比べると、成功の度合いが下がることは分かりますが、具体的にはどのようなことなのか確認しましょう。

 

それぞれに対する説明において、5では a relevant and very clearly expressed contribution, Relevant and well-elaborated explanations, exemplifications, and/or details、4では relevant contribution, Relevant and adequately elaborated explanations, exemplifications, and/or details と表現に差があります。5には very clearly expressed,  well-elaborated という表現がついているので、表現のレベルが高い、上手く説明されている、という印象をもつと5になると分かります。

 

また表現においては、5では Effective use of a variety of syntactic structures and precise, idiomatic word choice、4では A variety of syntactic structures and appropriate word choice と説明されていますが、多様な文法構造の効果的な使用が5には求められます。

 

5において表現・文法ミスに関しては、よくあるタイプミスやスペルミス、書き間違えがちな表現などが若干あってもOKと言いながらも、Almost no lexical or grammatical errors とミスはほとんどないのが5の条件になっています。4の Few lexical or grammatical errors もミスはほとんどないという訳語になりますが、こちらは少しはあってもOKという意味合い。

 

Academic DiscussionはIntegrated Writingと比べ、制限時間の短さにより、書く語数が少ないせいか、ミスの数に対してより厳しい文言になっています。

 

上記内容から、Integrated Writingにおいて伝えたことと同様に、Academic Discussionでも

 

表現、文法ミスが目立つ
説明不足や不正確な内容、分かりにくいところがある

 

と5獲得は難しいと分かります。

 

見方を変えれば、そのくらいのミスや不明瞭な箇所があっても4が取れると言うこと。5では最初から最後まで一貫して高い言語運用能力が示されているのに対して、4は少しミスがあったり、いくらか表現が平易なところがあっても、全体的に分かりやすく伝わっているレベルと説明されています。

 

評価点 3

A partially successful response

 

The response is a mostly relevant and mostly understandable contribution to the online discussion, and there is some facility in the use of language.

 

A typical response displays the following:

 

• Elaboration in which part of an explanation, example, or detail may be missing, unclear, or irrelevant
• Some variety in syntactic structures and a range of vocabulary
• Some noticeable lexical and grammatical errors in sentence structure, word form, or use of idiomatic language

 

ここでの見出しは

A partially successful response

「部分的には上手く書けている」、つまり「上手く書けていないところがある」ことを示しています。

 

The response is a mostly relevant and mostly understandable contribution to the online discussion, and there is some facility in the use of language.

 

3の方には relevant「関連した」の前にmostly「大部分は」がついていることと、その後にmostly understandableがあること。
「大部分が関連していて、大部分が理解できる」ということなので、一部、的はずれであったり、一部理解できないところがあると3という評価になります。

また3では、some facility「ある程度の能力」としか書かれていなく、運用能力は高くはないが、いくらかあるという感じ。

 

評価点4と比べながら、詳しい説明を確認しましょう。

 

• Elaboration in which part of an explanation, example, or detail may be missing, unclear, or irrelevant
「説明、例、詳細の一部が欠けている、不明瞭である、または関連性がない詳述」

 

4では

 

• Relevant and adequately elaborated explanations, exemplifications, and/or details

「関連性のある、適切に詳述された説明、例示、および/または詳細」

 

と褒める内容だったのに、3ではmissing, unclear, irrelevantとネガティブな表現が続きます。

 

そして

 

• Some variety in syntactic structures and a range of vocabulary

「いくらかの文法構造とある程度の単語の範囲」

 

は、4の

 

• A variety of syntactic structures and appropriate word choice

「多様な文法構造と適切な語彙選択」

 

と比べ、求められるレベルがかなり下がっています。

 

3の最後は

 

• Some noticeable lexical and grammatical errors in sentence structure, word form, or use of idiomatic language
「文の構造、単語の形、または慣用表現の使用において、いくつかの目立つ表現・文法ミス」

 

ここでは、4の

 

• Few lexical or grammatical errors
「表現・文法ミスが少しある」

 

と大きな差があります。

 

結論としては、4では表現・文法ミスは少しくらいならOK。しかし、表現・文法ミスが目立つくらいあると評価点は3になります。
また説明不足だったり、分かりにくいところがいくつかあっても3がもらえると伝えています。
