モチベーションアップ

オンラインTOEFLコースの受講生の方々からご報告やご相談のメールが毎日届きますが、中には様々な理由により「TOEFL対策へのモチベーションが下がっている」というものも。

TOEFLでの大幅なスコアアップにはそれなりの期間がかかります。
その間、状況によりやる気が上がったり、下がったりすることもあるでしょう。
しかし、モチベーションが下がったからと取り組みをやめたり、時間が大幅に減るとスコアアップは困難になります。
そのようなときは、何のためにTOEFL対策を行っているかの再確認が大切になります。

今後ときどき、モチベーションが下がったときに役に立ちそうな動画を紹介します。

今回はその1回目。

大学卒業式でのスピーチとして世界一有名と言っても過言ではない Steve JobsのStanford Commencement Address。
スタンフォード大学がYouTubeに上げたものは3千万回以上再生されています。
見たことがある人は多いでしょうが、このスピーチが行われたのは2005年と13年も前。
またスティーブ・ジョブズは7年ほど前に逝去されているので、10代、20代前半の方にはこのスピーチを見たことがない人もいらっしゃるかと思います。

また見たという方もかなり前のことで、内容をあまり覚えていないのではないでしょうか。

Steve Jobsは話の冒頭で

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.

と「話を3つする」と告げますが、それぞれがどのようなものであったか思い出せますか？

ということで「今、自分が取り組むべきことに対してモチベーションが低下している」ならもちろん、そうでなくても見る価値はあります。

スピーチは15分ほど。
以下、ほんの一部だけ取り上げます。
読んでみてください。

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

dogma (Macmillan Dictionary)
= a belief or set of beliefs that people are expected to accept without asking questions about them

「独断的な考え；教義」

drown out (The Free Dictionary)
= To use or create a louder noise to make a different, often unpleasant, noise less audible

「（大きな音が小さな音）をかき消す」

intuition (Collins English Dictionary)
= Your intuition or your intuitions are unexplained feelings you have that something is true even when you have no evidence or proof of it.

「直感（力）」

secondary (Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)
= less important than related things

「2番目の、（…の）次の、従位の、補助的な」
