＜For exampleの使い方に注意！＞

五十峰です。
さてTOEFL speakingではほぼ全員が使うであろうfor exampleの表現。何気ないこの表現の使い方には注意する必要があります。クラスでのテンプレートにも入れていません。何故でしょう？

1) 他の表現で印象付けよう

日本人受験生が猫も杓子もfor exampleを使うので、それ以外の表現を使うことで少しでも「おっ、こいつはこういう表現知ってるんだ、やるじゃん」とグレーダーのattentionを惹きつけることができます。for exampleを使う以外にも具体例は出せるからです。Let’s say …（例えば～だとしよう）、なんてのも新鮮ですし、前回の連載で書いたようにいきなりTen years ago　…なんてストーリーから入ってもいいですし、IndeedとかIn factなどの導入もありです。そのような表現を使う自信がないという人は、せめてfor instanceぐらいに変えてみましょう。

2) 使うなら正しく使おう

以下の文を見てください。正しいfor exampleの使い方と言えるでしょうか？

“I think that a good teacher should be supportive. For example, I went to ABC University, one of the most prestigious universities in Japan.”

もちろん正しくありませんよね。何故なら、for example以降には、先行文の内容を例示する内容が続かないといけないのです。この辺はReadingセクションを勉強している皆さんならお分かりですよね。上記の例ならば、先生がsupportiveである例が続くべきなのです。ですから

“… supportive. For example, a good teacher makes extra efforts to teach students outside class. Or a good teacher takes time to talk to each student.”

これなら正しいsupportiveの例になっていますよね。ですから、正しくexampleを出せてない可能性も皆さんには充分あるわけですから、そのエラーの印象を拭うために、無難にfor exampleを出すのを控えるように指導しているのです。for exampleと言わないで具体例に入っても全く問題はありませんが、for exampleと言ったのに具体例が続かないほうが印象としては悪いのです。

3) ガチガチテンプレートからの脱却を目指す

これは前回にも書いたとおりです。ガチガチテンプレートだと必ず

I prefer to ____________. For example, …

となっており、二言目にはFor exampleが来るようになっていますね。しかも過去の個人体験を出さなくてはいけない、と思い込むのはよくありません。いつまでもテンプレートに縛られていては、本当のスピーキング力はつきません。

個人体験の具体例を出さない回答例としては、こんな感じです：

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: it is important to learn about other cultures.

“I definitely believe that learning about other cultures has many benefits. One of my primary reasons is that you learn about your own culture by learning about other cultures. In other words, you could learn how significant your culture is by comparing it with other cultures. You may find something that you like or you don’t like about your culture―maybe customs, language, or people’s behaviors. Or, you may find out that other cultures are more attractive or advanced than yours. Either way, you could do that only if you learned about other cultures. Then, you truly appreciate your own culture as a result.” (106 words)

ちょっと堅く、wordyな感じはしますが、ガチガチの個人体験の具体例にはなっていません。青字の部分が、かろうじてちょっとした例になっているくらいでしょうか。また黒字の部分では「～かもしれない」という仮定的な表現で可能性を示しています。これでも立派な自分の意見のサポートになります。もちろん個人体験を入れてもOKなのですが、絶対に入れなくてはいけない、という思考からたまには離れてみましょう。ちなみに個人体験をいれるとこんな感じになります：

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: it is important to learn about other cultures.

I agree with the statement that it is important to learn about other cultures. One of the most important reasons is that you learn about your own culture by learning about other cultures. Personally, I had a good opportunity to think about Japanese family values when I visited America. In high school, I went to Oregon in an exchange program and stayed with a family there. They were very religious, and their kids were not allowed to watch TV! Compared to that, most Japanese families are not very strict about teaching religious values to children. So, by learning about the family values of another culture, I was able to think about my own culture. (114 words)

さていかがだったでしょうか？

決してfor exampleを使うな！というのではなく、ワンランク上のspeakingを目指す上では、ありきたりの型を卒業して、それなりに工夫や注意する事も必要
