Integrated Speaking – Task 5 落とし穴と対策

五十峰です。
さて今回はTask 5の話をしていきましょう。

Task 5は典型的なproblem⇒solutionsの形ですね。しかもsolutionsが必ず2つある、と判っているので聴きやすいですね。Task 3同様キャンパストピックで難易度は低いので、是非ともGoodを確実にとりましょう。

1) 陥りやすいミス

さて、今まで教えてきた生徒さんで一番多かったミスをお教えします。
それは、「設問をよく読まない」という単純なミスです。もう一度おさらいしましょう：

The students discuss two possible solutions to the woman’s (or man’s) problem. ①Briefly describe the problem. ②Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.

問われていることは二点です。
① 問題点の要約
② 2つの解決策のうち、自分はどちらを選ぶか、また何故か

注目すべきは②です。2つの解決策は何かを説明しなさいとは書いてないのに、それぞれの説明にやたら時間を割いて、指示されている自分の意見とその理由表明にかける時間が足りなくなってしまうという悪いパターンに陥ってしまうのです。恐らく設問をよく読まず、”Briefly describe the two solutions” だと勘違いしてしまうのかもしれません。とある大手参考書では「two solutionsの説明に30秒はかけなさい！」と書いてありました（ ﾟдﾟ）ﾎﾟｶｰﾝ。

では以下の「典型的なミスを犯している解答例」を分析してみましょう：

A man’s problem is that he is not doing well in his calculus class. He has so much homework and he is not ready for the final exam. The woman offers two possible solutions to the man’s problem. ①The first suggestion is to use the university’s tutoring program. The program provides individual tutoring in many subjects, and the tutors are mostly doctoral students who are excellent in teaching. ②However, students need to pay fees to use the service, and they also have to register in advance to make reservations. ③The second suggestion is to form a study group with other students. She personally has positive experiences with study groups because students can help each other’s weaknesses. ④However, the man has a negative experience and feels that it is a waste of time. ⑤I prefer to use a tutoring service because students can get correct information from good tutors.

① 最初のセンテンスで提案の内容がまとまっているのは良いが、その後の説明が長すぎ。
② & ④ 本試験でも、「提案に対しての問題点、ケチ」がつくことは多いです。しかし、それを限られた時間の中で含めるのは、難しいし、求められていません。
③ これも最初はOKですが、その後が長い。
⑤ ようやく自分の意見にたどり着けました。ただ短い！本当に表面的なことだけ言って終わりになってしまっているので、ここをもっと広げるべく、時間を取れるようにしないといけません。

以上の分析を踏まえ、イマイチ評価が上がらない人はまずこのミスを犯していないか確認してみましょう。もちろんワンランク上を狙う人は、two solutionsを入れたほうが情報整理ができている印象を与えられますので、それはそれでOKです。ただし簡潔にまとめることが条件です。余計な事はしないで、まずは確実に設問に答える、これが重要です。

2) 対策と練習方法

さてTask 5の効果的な練習としては、やはりTask 4同様、おススメiBT教材の問題やPBT（ITP）/CBT教材のlong conversationを使うことです。iBTも含めて、TOEFLのlong conversationにはほとんど必ずproblemが入っているので、Task 5の練習にはもってこいなのです。当然：
1) problem   2) solutions   3) your opinion
をポイントにメモりながら聞き、実際に自分で話してみましょう。

では以下の例を見てみましょう：

W: Hi, Mark, how’s it going?
M: Well, not so great.
W: What’s wrong?
M: I got a big problem with the poetry course that is required for my major.
W: Is it all filled up?
M: No, no, there’s plenty of room, but there’s a prerequisite. I’ve got to take Introduction to Poetry before I can take the special course in Poets of the 1960’s. And the introductory course is only offered in the evenings.
W: You don’t like evening classes?
M: No. That’s not the point. I work in the cafeteria every evening. I need the money to pay my tuition.
W: Can you ask someone that works to switch hours with you? Maybe you could just switch a couple of evenings since the course probably only meets two times a week.
M: I wish I could. My boss just did me a favor by putting me on evenings. And he’ll hit the ceiling if I ask to change again.
W: Wait a minute. I have an idea. Have you checked the courses over at the community college? They might offer an intro-poetry course during the day.
M: Hey, that’s a great idea! I am free this afternoon, I think I’ll go over and check it out.
W: Yeah. Their courses are actually cheaper, and you can transfer the credits over here.
M: Thanks for the advice, Linda. I’ll let you know what happens.

いかがでしょう？もうお分かりですね。青字がproblem、赤字が提案になってます。しかも提案は2つ。
あとはこれらを自分の言葉でまとめ、どちらを選ぶか自分で理由を述べるだけです。
