【再掲】TOEFL Writing：評価基準 5点、4点、3点 の違い を説明します！

※ 2023年7月末以降、Independent Writingはなくなり、Academic Discussionに変わっています。

 

Writingセクションは5段階評価［5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0］
（0もあるので厳密には6段階ですが、試験を受ける方がWritingセクションを放棄しない限り、0を取ることはないので無視します）

 

大まかな目安は以下の通り。

 

評価点平均1 なら 8点 くらい
評価点平均2 なら 14点 くらい
評価点平均3 なら 20点 くらい
評価点平均4 なら 25点 くらい
評価点平均5 なら 30点

 

この大まかな目安から目標スコアを獲得するためにWritingセクションで求められる評価点が定まります。
（Writing セクションで25点が必要なら、Integrated、Independentともに評価点4獲得が目標になる）

 

今回は、皆さんが獲得を目指す評価点3、4、5はどのように異なるのかについて説明します。

 

では、Integrated W、Independent WそれぞれのRubrics「評価基準」を確認しましょう。
まずは評価点5と評価点4の違いから。

Integrated Writing

 

評価点 5

A response at this level successfully selects the important information from the lecture and coherently and accurately presents this information in relation to the relevant information presented in the reading. The response is well organized, and occasional language errors that are present do not result in inaccurate or imprecise presentation of content or connections.

 

評価点 4

A response at this level is generally good in selecting the important information from the lecture and in coherently and accurately presenting this information in relation to the relevant information in the reading, but it may have minor omission, inaccuracy, vagueness, or imprecision of some content from the lecture or in connection to points made in the reading. A response is also scored at this level if it has more frequent or noticeable minor language errors, as long as such usage and grammatical structures do not result in anything more than an occasional lapse of clarity or in the connection of ideas.

 

まあ、評価点5はイイコトしか書いてませんよね。
注目すべきは、赤字の「ちょっとミスがあっても、ReadingとListeningの内容やそれらの関連は間違っていない」でしょうか。
完璧でなくても「ちょっとしたミスはあってもいいよ」ということ。

 

それに対して評価点4は、評価点5のsuccessfullyと比べ、generally goodとなっています。ただ、このあたりは受験者自身では判断が難しいところでしょう。
採点官側からするとsuccessfulであるには「表現力が高い」「まとめ方が簡潔」である必要がありますが、Integrated Writingの場合は、問題内の表現を上手く使えば、それなりに高度な表現ができますし、まとめ方は効果的なテンプレートを使用すれば対応が可能です。

 

続いて、評価点4の赤字部分。
評価点5では「RLの内容やつながりは間違っていない」ということでしたが、評価点4では「少しではあるものの、説明が足りなかったり、内容が不正確であったり、あいまいであったり」というマイナス点が挙げられています。
また「頻繁な、または目立つ、ちょっとした表現や文法のミスがある。でもたまに分かりにくいところがあったり、内容がつながらないところがある程度なら」となっています。

 

ということで、Integrated Writingにおいて

 

表現、文法ミスが目立つ
説明不足や不正確な内容、分かりにくいところがある

 

と5獲得は難しいということに。

 

見方を変えれば、そのくらいのミスや不明瞭な箇所があっても4が取れると言えます。

 

評価点 3

A response at this level contains some important information from the lecture and conveys some relevant connection to the reading, but it is marked by one or more of the following:

● Although the overall response is definitely oriented to the task, it conveys only vague, global, unclear, or somewhat imprecise connection of the points made in the lecture to points made in the reading.

● The response may omit one major key point made in the lecture.

● Some key points made in the lecture or the reading, or connections between the two, may be incomplete, inaccurate, or imprecise.

● Errors of usage and/or grammar may be more frequent or may result in noticeably vague expressions or obscured meanings in conveying ideas and connections.

 

まず青字部分ですが、「Listeningや、Readingとの関連における『重要な情報』はちゃんと書いてある」のが前提。「重要な情報」が抜けていると3獲得は難しいということに。

 

そして4つの項目が挙げられていますが、そのうちひとつでも当てはまると4にはなりません。

 

● 確かに問題に対して回答しているものの、ListeningのポイントとReadingのポイントの関連が全体的に曖昧だったり、不明確だったり、かなり不正確だったり。

● Listeningでの（3つのうちの）1つの重要なポイントが抜けている。

● ListeningやReadingの内容、またはRLの関連における重要なポイントが不完全だったり、不正確だったり。

● 表現や文法のエラーが頻繁だったり、それらのエラーにより内容や関連の記述において曖昧な表現や意味不明なところが目立ったり。

 

ここで特に注目すべきは、

 

「Listeningでの（3つのうちの）1つの重要なポイントが抜けている」

 

つまり、レクチャーの3つのポイントのひとつが聞き取れず理解できないと4以上の獲得は極めて難しくなります。
Integrated Writingにおいて安定して4以上を取るには、3つのポイントのほとんどを理解できなければなりません。Integrated Wでの高得点獲得には高いListening力が求められ、それが「TOEFL対策はまずListeningの取り組みから」とお勧めしている理由のひとつになります。

 

また、そこそこ不正確であったり、不明確であったり、抜けているところがあったりしても3獲得のチャンスがあるとも言えます。
ちなみに評価点2は「内容や表現において間違いや不足が『多い』」であり、RLが20点くらいの人なら評価点3が取れるようになるのは難しくはありません。

 

 

Independent Writing

 

続いて、Independent Writingにおける評価点5と4の違いを確認しましょう。

 

評価点 5

An essay at this level largely accomplishes all of the following:

● Effectively addresses the topic and task

● Is well organized and well developed, using clearly appropriate explanations, exemplifications, and/or details

● Displays unity, progression, and coherence

● Displays consistent facility in the use of language, demonstrating syntactic variety, appropriate word choice, and idiomaticity, though it may have minor lexical or grammatical errors

 

まあ、5点の評価はイイコトしか書いていませんね。
マイナス点は、赤字の「表現や文法ミスが少しあるくらい」。
5点獲得の難しさがうかがえます。

 

評価点 4

An essay at this level largely accomplishes all of the following:

● Addresses the topic and task well, though some points may not be fully elaborated

● Is generally well organized and well developed, using appropriate and sufficient explanations, exemplifications, and/or details

● Displays unity, progression, and coherence, though it may contain occasional redundancy, digression, or unclear connections

● Displays facility in the use of language, demonstrating syntactic variety and range of vocabulary, though it will probably have occasional noticeable minor errors in structure, word form, or use of idiomatic language that do not interfere with meaning

 

4点の評価項目のイイトコは5点のものとだいたい同じ。
違うのは赤字のマイナス点。

 

重要なポイントで十分に説明されていないところがある。
ときおり同じ表現が繰り返されたり、話が脱線したり、話の繋がりが不明になることがある。
表現や文法においてちょっとしたミスが目立つことがある。しかし意味理解は問題ない。

 

このようなところが散見されると5点獲得は難しくなります。

 

評価点 3

An essay at this level is marked by one or more of the following:

● Addresses the topic and task using somewhat developed explanations, exemplifications, and/or details

● Displays unity, progression, and coherence, though connection of ideas may be occasionally obscured

● May demonstrate inconsistent facility in sentence formation and word choice that may result in lack of clarity and occasionally obscure meaning

● May display accurate but limited range of syntactic structures and vocabulary

 

ここではマイナス点として

 

説明、例示、詳細が十分に展開されていないところがある。
内容のつながりがときに曖昧である。
文の構造や単語の選択に難があり、その結果、分かりにくかったり、曖昧になっている。
構文や語彙が限られている。

 

が挙げられています。

 

上の「構文や語彙が限られている」から、4以上を取るには高い単語力を持ち、様々な構文が使える必要があると分かります。
またミスや不十分な説明により、分かりにくかったり、曖昧なところがあると4獲得は難しくなります。

 

ちなみに3点の評価基準は、大まかには「展開、構成、関連、例示、説明、詳細が不十分」「単語の選択・用法、文法・文構造でミスが多い」となります。

 

まとめ

 

ということで、WritingのIntegratedタスク、Independentタスクの評価基準における評価点5、4、3の違いを確認しました。

 

それぞれの評価点に当てはまるエッセイを見ていない状況では違いが分かりにくいかもしれません。
しかし、少なくともミスの多さや単語数だけによって決まるものではないと分かっていただけるかと思います。

 

「Independent Writingは今回、500語以上書けたから5点が狙えるのでは」

 

というような意見を目にすることがありますが、語数は評価基準で挙げられているポイントではなく、そのような考え方は往々にして正しくありません。

 

Independent Writingの問題では、以下のようにeffective response（4点以上のエッセイ）を獲得するための語数の目安があるものの、人間の採点官には語数は表示されませんし、語数が多いからよいスコアになる訳ではありません。

 

Directions: Read the question below. You have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay. Typically, an effective response will contain a minimum of 300 words.

 

評価基準で挙げられた様々なポイントにおいてどの評価が当てはまるかを気にしましょう。
