【再掲】TOEFL Reading：単語問題解法のポイントを教えます！
以下、過去記事の再掲です。
トフレのコースを受講されたばかりの方（お名前をCさんとします）との学習相談メールのやり取りにおいて、Readingの単語問題の解き方について質問がありました。
ちなみにCさんの過去3回のReadingスコアは、最近のものから順に30、24、25。
30点を取ることもあるものの、単語問題では選択肢を残り2つに絞った後に間違えることが多く、今回TPO問題1セットを解いた際に数問間違ったというご相談をいただいたので、不正解だった単語問題ではどの選択肢を選んだかも含めお知らせいただきました。
そしてCさんに了承いただき、ブログ記事上で単語問題における解き方の一部を伝えることにします。
以下、Cさんの不正解の4問。すべてTPO14のReading問題です。
ここでは選択肢は2つに絞っています。AかBの片方が正解で、もう片方がCさんが選んでしまったもの。
問われている単語を含む1文も掲載します。A、Bどちらが正解か選んでください。
TPO14, Passage 1

以下、Cさんからの単語問題に対するご相談内容。
「文脈上の意味の方向性はわかっているのですが、選択肢の単語を変に深読みしてしまい、「この単語にはこんな意味もあるのでは」という感じで選ぶことが往々にして多く、間違うことが多いです（合っていたとしてもあまり自信は持てていないです）。」
TOEFL Readingの単語問題において、単語の意味を深読みしたり「こんな意味もあるのでは」と推測することはお勧めしません。なぜなら単語問題で
設問の単語の意味を知っている場合は、選択肢の中から設問の単語に意味が似ているものを選ぶ
べきだから。つまり、
単語問題は基本的に、単語を知っていれば選択肢だけで正解を選べるので、文脈での確認は不要となります。
上の単語問題ですが、正解はすべてAでした。Bは全部不正解の選択肢。
選択肢Bが文脈上合わないということではないので、Cさん同様、Bを選んだり、Bと迷った方は多いでしょう。
中には「Bの方が文脈としてよりよい意味と考えた」という理由でBを選んだ方もいるかも。
しかし、TOEFLの単語問題においてそのような考え方をしてはいけません。
問われているのは、問題の単語と最も意味が近いものを選ぶことであり、単語の意味を知っている場合は、文脈を気にすることなくすぐに正解を選べます。
順番通りではありませんが、最後の問題の striking の意味は
= attracting attention or notice through unusual or conspicuous qualities

なので、A）noticeable が正解になります。
ちなみに convincing の意味は
= making you believe that something is true or right

単語問題は「文脈上どちらがふさわしいか」を選ぶ問題ではなく、問われている単語の意味に近いものを選択することが求められます。
単語の日本語訳ではどちらでも良さそうな気がしても、英英辞典で確認するとどちらが正解か判断しやすくなります。

では、その他の問題で問われていた3つの単語を確認すると
verify の意味は

prestige の意味は
= the high reputation and respect that someone or something has earned, based on their impressive achievements, quality, etc.

なので A）status が正解。B）demand は不正解。

なので、A）far-reaching が正解。B）positive は不正解。
ここでのprofoundはimpactを修飾しているため「far-reaching impactよりもpositive impactの方がしっくりくる」という理由で、positiveを選んだ人がいたかもしれません。

確かに“far-reaching impact”で検索すると約 723,000 件とそれなりに多いものの、それに対して “positive impact” は約 134,000,000 件と圧倒的に上回っています。
しかし、修飾関係にある単語との相性の良さは解答のポイントにならないとご理解ください。
以上、単語問題において問われている「単語の意味を知っている場合」の解答ポイントについてお話しました。
単語問題で、設問の単語をもともと知っていればあっという間に正解でき、他の問題に時間をかけることができます。単語力を増強し、単語問題に費やす時間を節約することは高得点を取るための大切なポイントです。
